FREE Los Pastores

Event Rating:
Experience a San Antonio Tradition. Mary & Joseph go to Bethlehem.
A Tejano tradition, this morality play portrays the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem for the nativity of the Christ Child.

For December’s free Second Sunday, the Institute of Texan Cultures teams with Our Lady of Guadalupe Church for "Los Pastores," a classic play depicting the passage of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. A morality play, the devil sends his minions to dissuade shepherds and others from making the trip to do homage to the Christ Child. Defended by angels, the demons are struck down.

Families are welcome to participate in a workshop with the troupe from Our Lady of Guadalupe, with information on the significance of the play, learning the songs and making costumes, such as devil masks and angel crowns children can take home. Additionally, each child attending will receive a copy of "Rosita's Christmas Wish" by Mary Ann Smothers Bruni (a children’s book, while supplies last, limit one book per family/household)

Workshop is 1 – 3 p.m.

Performance is 3 - 5 p.m.
